Kay Gates

October 4, 1942 — December 23, 2021


Kay was born at home in Escalante, Utah to Jim and Erma Schow Gates on October 4, 1942. He was a twin to a brother who lived a half hour. His sister is 15 years older than him.

He met Kathryn Penrod on a blind date at Bryce Canyon when she was working.. Their first dance was a disaster, she stepped on his feet, but she learned. They were married  on April 20,1973. They lived in Vernal for 12 years. Kay grew up in Escalante as a happy go lucky cowboy, attending every dance ever held.

He worked at Theron's Conoco service station for years. And in Vernal he worked for Dowell in the oil fields. Kay drove truck over the road for years, driving over 3 million miles. His favorite job was driving tour bus for Lake Shore bus line and meeting so many people.  He served a mission in the east central states. After his mission he served in Germany during the Vietnam war.

He served in many church callings especially being Sunday school president. He was a faithful home teacher. He loved being an ordinance worker in the Provo and Payson temples. But most of all, Kay loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn, children Kirk (Tracy) Gates, Kristine (Tony) Knapp, Karen (Brent) Corry, Kevin (Tracy) Gates, Kortney (Ron) Sanders;17 precious grandchildren, 11 girls and 6 boys; plus 1 and 8/9 great grandsons. Kay is preceded in death by his parents Jim & Erma, sister Montel Revord and brother Ray.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elberta, Utah LDS Church, 15456 S 12800 West with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment, Goshen City Cemetery with military honors.
