John Charles Sutherland passed away November 6, 2021 peacefully at his home in Eureka surrounded by his loved ones. John was born January 1, 1942 in Park City, Utah to Walter and Ila Sutherland. He was the first New Year baby to be born and his parents received many gifts for his arrival.
At the age of 2 John moved with his family to Eureka, Utah where he attended Eureka Elementary and Tintic High School, graduating in 1960. While in high school he met the love of his life, Brenda Gourley.
On September 9, 1960 John joined the United States Marine Corp. After spending a year overseas, he came home on furlough and he and Brenda were married on April 21, 1962. Brenda then joined John for the remainder of his service in the Marines. Their oldest daughter Becky was born in California while they were stationed there.
After being discharged John and Brenda moved back to Eureka where they made their lifelong home and welcomed two more children to their family, Kristi and Derrick.
John was a miner, working at most of the mines in the Eureka area. He also worked at Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Grounds.
John’s favorite things were spending time with his family, camping at Fish Lake, having family dinners, hunting deer and pine nuts, dancing and enjoying his wife’s delicious cooking.
He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; his three kids, Becky (Brian) Underwood, Kristi (JB) Hannifin and Derrick (April) Sutherland; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren who were the gems of his life; brothers, Craig (Betty) Sutherland of Arizona, Kerry (Cathy) Sutherland of Denver, Colorado and sister Ann (James) Anderson of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sylvia and his in-laws, Babe and Erma Gourley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 12:00 noon at the Brown Family Mortuary, 66 South 300 East, Santaquin with a viewing prior to the services from 10:00 to 11:45 am. Burial will follow at the Eureka City Cemetery with military honors.
