Byron Sorensen

July 28, 1928 — May 2, 2018

Byron Peter Sorensen, age 89, was born July 28, 1928 to Byron H. and Laverne Gillespie Sorensen in Mammoth, Utah.  He died May 2, 2018 in Orem, Utah.

At an early age, because of Byron's mental disabilities, he was not expected to live past the age of 13.  He defied all odds and reached the age of 89. Even though By was mentally challenged he was fascinated with radios and was able to repair small electronic devices. He always wanted to become a Ham Radio operator.  Unfortunately he was never able to accomplish that dream.  He enjoyed listening to police scanners, communications from the Forest Service, BLM and Fire Department.

He loved camping and watching westerns (especially John Wayne).  He loved his tomato soup, cactus candy and chocolate covered strawberries. He was always knitting and crocheting and if you would ask what he was doing he would say “just keeping my hands busy”.

By was in charge of the tool cage at the Mammoth Mine and he was a crossing guard at the school.  On visits to see his brother in Grants, New Mexico he worked at Bill's restaurant, The Wow Diner, restocking and rotating groceries and paper goods.  He was so proud to have his own key.

Everyone that met By loved him.  He will be greatly missed.  He was survived by numerous cousins and good friends.
